Westerville is a suburb northeast of Columbus, Ohio. First settled in 1810, Westerville was not incorporated as a city until 1858. Westerville was once known as “the Dry Capital of the World,” for its laws banning the sale of alcohol within the city limits.
Westerville has a rich and storied history dating back to the Civil War. During the Antebellum era, many homes in Westerville were stations on the Underground Railroad. Owned by the Ohio Historical Society and managed by the Westerville Historical Society, Hanby’s home is the only state memorial to a composer in Ohio. Handy wrote many familiar songs and hymns including “Who is He in Yonder Stall,” and the famous Christmas song “Up On the Housetop.”
