The community of Powell, Ohio, was first settled in 1801, and originally named “Middlebury,” after its first settlers that came to the area from Middlebury, Connecticut. Judge Thomas Powell established the first post office in 1857, and the residents adopted his name for their town. Powell was officially incorporated as a city in 1947.
Powell is an upscale bedroom community of Columbus, and many of the residents commute to Columbus and its outlying suburbs for work. The affluent neighborhoods in Powell are dotted with upscale and luxury homes in communities such as The Chase, Loch Lomand, Canterbury Estates, Golf Village, and The Retreat. Powell was ranked 18 on the CNN Money and Money magazine’s list of the 100 Best Places to Live.
A number of antique shops and bistros can be found in historic downtown Powell. The city is home to many typical Midwestern grocery stores and restaurants, but due to the wishes of its residents, does not allow development of any major technological, financial, or industrial businesses. In fact, the Community Oversight Foundation engaged in a dispute against Wal-Mart and banned them from coming to the town on the grounds that the big box store would drop property values and be detrimental to the preservation of the Powell’s historic nature.
Powell houses 85 acres of park land and more than 12 miles of trails, offering the residents a number of opportunities for walking, jogging, and bicycling. In nearby Liberty Township, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and its water park Zoombezi Bay, The O’Shaughnessy Dam, and the historic Olentangy Indian Caverns provide visitors and residents alike entertainment and recreational activities.
